West York Community Garden Project

Picture
The West York Community Garden Project is dedicated to bringing a community garden to the residents of West York, PA. Community gardens are a fantastic way to bring the community together. Teaching each other and our children about the importance of healthy eating and self-sustainability is very important. Many folks in West York have very small or no back yards at all; for those people, growing their own fruits and vegetables was never before an option. With the creation of the West York Community Garden Project those folks now have a voice. The more families involved in the project the louder our voice will become and eventually the borough will hear us and allow us the space to come together and provide for our families.

Today the second seed delivery came this time from Johnnys Seeds. It included two types of cucumbers, basil, dill, cilantro, & tomatillos. The cucumbers and the tomatillos will need to be started inside of a starter dome, they can be started up to six weeks before planting outdoors. This will give the plants a nice controlled environment to germinate and start the early growth stage. The cauliflower, broccoli, and brussels sprouts from the first shipment will also have to be started this way.

Today we got the first shipment of seeds for the test garden
we are doing this year.  We were offered space in East Berlin, PA this location is twelve miles away from the proposed community garden in West York. The design and layout as well as a basic list of the fruits and vegetables we will be growing can be found at
http://www.growveg.com/garden-plan.aspx?p=226110 This will be a major upgrade from our previous container gardens in our backyard the last few years. The results from this garden will be documented and used to learn not only exactly what will do best in our community garden but also which
seed companies are the most reliable.
